CHAPTER 2: CAPTURING ■
Naming and Commenting Clips During Capture
As you are capturing the source material to your drives, you may have noticed that the Clip Name
space has an active cursor.During capture, you can type in a name for your clip. This speeds up the
capturing process by not having to go back later to do data entry. There is also an entry for a clip
description. To switch between the two, press Tab and begin typing.
DV Scene Extraction
Perhaps the best thing about nonlinear editing is its random access capabilities. How-
ever, the randomness of access becomes glaringly apparent when you have long clips
containing varying subject matter. In fact, if the project is not carefully constructed,
you could find yourself shuttling through long clips, much as you would though linear
videotape. To solve this issue, there is DV Scene Extraction.
The concept behind DV Scene Extraction is simple: divide and conquer. In a
world where too much information is the order of the day, DV Scene Extraction allows
you to choose smaller sections of a clip and create subsections (or subclips) and then
categorize them more specifically. Let’s say, for example, you shot footage at your local
zoo. On a single recorded clip, you captured the penguins, an aviary, some alligators, a
lion, and two tigers. If you want to go straight to the alligators, how can you do it?
Isn’t it simpler to create a subclip for each?
When DV footage is shot, time of day (TOD) information is recorded. DV
Scene Extraction allows you to capture from the entire tape, but will create subclips
and/or locators from each individual shot in a clip. This is distinguished through
TOD information.
Whenever the TOD changes between shots, DV Scene Extraction recognizes it
and creates a locator on the master clip (or it can create a subclip of each shot, depend-
ing on how you’ve set it up).
To set up DV Scene Extraction before digitizing footage:
1. Go to the Project window and select Settings.
2. Choose Capture Settings.
3. Click the DV Options tab (see Figure 2.35).
4. Select Create Subclips, Add Locators, or Both.
Note: DV Scene Extraction works only when you capture at DV-25 resolution.
