■ TUTORIAL: IMPORT AND EXPORT
Render Effects
Xpress Pro’s Expert Render can determine exactly how many of your effects need to be
rendered in your sequence before you do your digital cut. Expert Render tends to work
on the safe side, so your sequence should play back without failure. If you really want
to play it safe, and you have the time, you can render everything.
Rendering with Software Only (Xpress Pro)
If you’re using the software only, choose Special > Enable Digital Video Out (see
Figure 6.34).
You’ll notice that your Digital Video Toggle may have switched colors. The rea-
son is that for output, you have to turn off real-time effects. What does this mean?
Well, you’re going to be rendering all the effects in your Timeline. This might take a
while. We highly recommend a thorough study of the Appendix and Glossary of this
book while rendering. Who knows? You might learn something new.
Before you go any further with your digital cut procedure, let’s talk about offline
resolution. If you used 15:1s, you will not easily be able to get a digital cut out of
Xpress Pro. When you select Special
> Enable Digital Video Out, Xpress Pro beeps at
you and informs you that only DV-25 sequences can be used when non-real-time mode
is selected. What does this mean? Basically, Xpress Pro does not want to output single-
field, poor-resolution video.
There’s a workaround for this, but it will take a little time. And keep in mind
that your sequence will still look like 15:1s video. It’s the same thing you heard about
any computer process: garbage in, garbage out.
You can transcode your sequence from low resolution to DV-25. To do this, you
could select the 15:1s sequence in your bin and then select Bin
> Consolidate/Transcode
(see Figure 6.35). When the Consolidate/Transcode menu appears, select Transcode and
make sure that DV-25 is selected (see Figure 6.36). You’ll also need to select a target
drive. In this case, you’ll be creating a new sequence. Transcode the sequence. A new
sequence with the suffix “.transcode” will appear in your bin, along with all of the clips.
