keyscope A telecine log format using files that
end with .ksl.
kilobyte (KB) Approximately one thousand
bytes of information.
kilohertz (kHz) One thousand cycles per second.
layback The process of transferring a finished
audio track back to the master videotape.
L-cut A type of sync edit in which the transi-
tion of audio and video from a source does
not occur at the exact same time. Also called
a delay, split, or overlap edit.
leader Film-like materials that are attached to
head and tail of a reel of film. The clear leader
is used as a protecting agent and threading
guide for a reel and is attached at the head
and tail. The picture leader contains writing
that identifies the reel and its contents. The
picture leader is usually placed at the head
and tail. The Society of Motion Picture and
Television Engineers (SMPTE) or Academy
leader provides a countdown before the pic-
ture content of a film begins. The SMPTE or
Academy leader is placed at the head of a
reel adjacent to picture content.
lift The process of removing selected frames
from a sequence and leaving a black space in
their place.
light That portion of the electromagnetic
spectrum between 380 and 780 nm that is
visually detectable by a normal human
observer.
light source A physical emitter of electromag-
netic energy between 380 and 780 nm.
linear editing A type of tape editing in which
you assemble the program chronologically
from beginning to end.
lined script A script prepared by the script
supervisor, marked with vertical lines to
determine coverage of a shot, indicating
which characters are on camera for a given
take at a given time. Used by editors for easy
reference.
line feed A recording of a program that is
switched between camera sources by a tech-
nical director. Also known as line cut.
liquid gate A process in which film is
immersed in a suitable liquid at the moment
of exposure to reduce scratches and abrasions.
Also known as wet gate.
locator In Avid, a mark added to a selected
frame that can be annotated with information.
log The entering of information about clips
that could include timecode, audio and video
tracks, key numbers, and so forth. Can also
refer to a medium on which the logging data
is placed, such as a file or paper.
looping The recording of multiple takes of
dialog or sound effects. Also a term for auto-
mated dialog replacement (ADR).
lossless compression A compression scheme in
which no data is lost. In video compression,
lossless data files are very large.
lossy compression A compression scheme in
which some pertinent data is thrown away,
resulting in loss of image quality. The degree
of loss depends on the specific compression
algorithm used.
LTC Acronym for longitudinal timecode. A
type of Society of Motion Picture and Televi-
sion Engineers (SMPTE) timecode that is
recorded on an assigned address track of a
videotape.
luma The achromatic part of a video signal
that refers to a quantity of light.
luminance The measure of an object that cor-
relates with the perception of brightness.
