THE AVID PRODUCT LINE
From this technology, we in the workforce learned two important things: First,
Newton was right. You can always count on gravity. The size of the cards and the
fact that they were side-mounted caused them to slip away from the sockets, eventu-
ally disconnecting themselves. There were numerous attempts to make the connec-
tions tighter, but few worked. The solution? Turn your computer tower sideways, so
that the gravity of the coprocessors pushed downward on the NuBus sockets, secur-
ing the connection.
The second important lesson of the NuBus systems was this: When you use
equipment connected by tiny pins, chances are that eventually the pins will bend or
break. The process of connecting the cards to their corresponding sockets must be done
with a firm but sensitive grip. Alignment must be perfect. Misalignment causes bent
pins. Although not recommended by Avid, I frequently used a pair of needle-nosed
pliers to straighten out pins. (That’s me in Figure 1.4.) I suppose I was lucky because it
always worked. But if you break a pin, the card is worthless.
Figure 1.4 Technology Marches On, Circa 1993.Everything you see in this picture (including the author and the telephone) is
obsolete.
Why all this discussion about the NuBus systems? They were created in 1989
and were determined obsolete by the mid-90s. But surprisingly, quite a few schools and
small organizations have managed to extend their lifetime. Many are still in use, and
you might find yourself using one. If you do, I’ve told you the most important stuff.
