CHAPTER 4: THE TIMELINE
You can also move multiple tracks such as video and two audio tracks by Shift-
clicking the desired tracks or clips or by lassoing them. To lasso the desired clips or
tracks, move the Extract/Splice cursor above the top track and drag from left to right
down over the desired clips and tracks on the Timeline. Your selection will be high-
lighted, and now you can move your selection to a new location in the Timeline.
Audio and video elements of a clip do not automatically follow each other. They
must be selected by one of the preceding methods.
If you undo and instead move the brown bear to the beginning of the panda clip,
the panda clip is moved forward and is not replaced by the brown bear as it would be
using the Lift/Overwrite tool.
It is important to understand that there is a setting that will affect the
Extract/Splice tool in the Timeline settings in the Project window. If you open this and
click on the Edit tab, you will see a check box for Segment Drag Sync Locks with this
checked, dragging and dropping a clip with the Extract/Splice tool will open space for
the clip on all tracks and close up the gap where the clip was previously. With Segment
Drag Sync Locks unchecked, you will be moving only clips that you select on that
track. There is a potential to throw sync sound off by using the tool in this manner.
Moving Sections of the Timeline
On occasion, you might encounter a situation where you want to move entire segments
of video and audio on the Timeline. As long as these segments are contiguous (a fancy
word meaning that there are no segments between them), you can do this.
Let me give you yet another example. You’ve created a little sequence with some
in-studio shots of interviews. In the middle of your section is a segment in which a
music video appears, followed by more in-studio shots. Now the director has requested
that the movie video be moved to the very end of the program. How would you do it?
1. Select the Extract/Splice button.
2. Move in the Timeline so that the entire music video appears.
3. To select multiple contiguous clips, hold down the Shift key and click above the
top track, drag down over your tracks, lassoing the clips from left to right. When
the lasso is finished, let go of the mouse (see Figure 4.27).
