CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION TO AVID AND EDITING
Figure 1.6 A modern Avid keyboard
For some, it was still something of a burden to have to rely on so many
coprocessors. But the reliability was unmistakable. These systems rarely failed, and
when they did, the problems were almost always either processor failure or introduc-
tion of other software that was not compatible with Avid software.
The reason why so many people continue to use Meridien systems is simple:
They work. The technology is all there; the tools are all available. Why change? For
others, the adoption of a less-complicated coprocessing system lured them to Avid’s lat-
est line of systems: DNA (Digital Nonlinear Accelerator) with both Adrenaline and
Mojo subsystems.
DNA Avids
Take a Meridien system and put it in a small box. Okay, you can’t do it. The box would
have to be big. For three years, Avid developed a small box with a subsystem capable
of playing back uncompressed video without the need to render before viewing.
This system is the Adrenaline system (see Figure 1.7). Using Adrenaline or Avid
Mojo, a user can move a small box and a hardware key from any system (Mac or Win-
dows) to any other system. It allows you to change computers, keep up with technol-
ogy, and move equipment more easily and efficiently. There is no need for individual
coprocessor concerns. Adrenaline and Mojo either work or they don’t. Best of all, on
the Adrenaline, you can combine different resolutions, including the older ABVB AVR
