underneath. In essence, it’s just a wrapper for nested effects. Some other NLE products

call them “containers.”

After you place the Submaster effect on the segment, you can select one of the

segment-editing buttons on the bottom of the Timeline. It doesn’t matter which one is

chosen, because it’s only a method of expanding the Timeline to show the nest. With

the Segment mode selected, double-click the Submastered clip in the sequence. The

Timeline expands vertically, showing a video track V1.1. (You can also do this by

going into Effects mode first and then double-clicking without using Segment mode.)

We’ll drag and drop a mask on top of this segment.

Now double-click track V1.1. It expands to show track V2.1. In this case,

instead of counting vertical tracks, Xpress Pro is counting nested tracks, differentiating

between V2, and V2.1. Here we’ll add the Flop effect, which reverses the picture

horizontally.

Now we’ll add more to the equation. Double-click track V2.1 and expand to

track V3.1 (see Figure 7.21). Here we’ll add a color effect. Finally, we’ll double-click

V3.1 and expand it, revealing V4.1. Here we’ll add our pan and zoom, so that the

picture will be imported from its original file and panned on the audio cue, as we

discussed earlier.

So the processing order goes like this: Pan & Zoom > Color Effect > Flop Effect >

Mask > Submaster > V1. And the whole process is in front of you, so you can pick each

effect and adjust it with the Effect Editor. The audio will play back normally, and you

can still see the entire nest.

Now that you’ve made the adjustments, how do you get the nest to disappear

back inside of V1 on the Timeline? Again, using a segment-editing mode, double-click

V1. The nest disappears. In this instance, you have created about five layers of effects

on one piece of media. Can your system play it back in real time? Probably. Because

you are not dealing with five separate streams of video, it is much easier for Xpress Pro

to play back, even with five different effects on the single stream.
