CHAPTER 6: IMPORTING, EXPORTING, AND DIGITAL CUT ■
Still Graphics
Still graphics are a big part of any production. Examples can include show credits,
charts, pictures, logos, and more. Avid has expanded from the original “PICT only”
days to offer a very pleasing variety of graphic file formats in Xpress Pro. Supported
formats on Xpress Pro include the following:
Alias (.als) OMFI (.omf) PNG (.png) Targa (.tga)
Bitmap (.bmp) JPEG (.jpg) QRT (.dbw) TIFF (.tif)
Chyron (.chr) Photoshop (.psd) Rendition (.6m) Wavefront (.rla)
Cineon (.cin) PICT (.pic,.pict,.pct) SGI (.rgb) X-Windows (.xwd)
Framestore (.fs) PCX (.pcx) Softimage (.pic) Abekas YUV (.yuv)
IFF (.iff) Pixar (.pxr) Sunraster (.sun) Photo CD (Mac only)
Of these still graphic file formats, Free DV can import PICT (.pic, .pict, .pct) and
JPEG (.jpg). But never fear—there’s a way to convert other formats.
As you can see, there are some formats that might not be on the list. For these
formats, you can download a graphic converter application from the Internet. Some
graphic converters that offer a stunning array of file format conversions are shareware;
others offer a trial use of their application.
Preparing Graphic Files
After you’ve converted your files into a format that is supported on Free DV or Xpress
Pro, you’ll need to prepare them so that they fit into the frame properly. A little prep
work goes a long way when it comes to still graphics.
When you prep a file, there are certain criteria that need to be understood,
including:
• Frame size
• Pixel aspect
• Color levels and color space
• Field ordering (for motion graphics)
• Field dominance (for motion graphics)
• Alpha channel
• Format (already covered)
Note: Perhaps the most commonly used converter for Macintosh is called Graphic Converter—a unique
name,eh? But it handles many different formats and does the job for relatively little expense, around $30
(USD).Graphic Converter from Lemke Software can be found at http://www.lemkesoft.de/en/
index.htm.It’s a direct download, and like all shareware, you can try and then buy.
