CHAPTER 6: IMPORTING, EXPORTING, AND DIGITAL CUT
Be sure to select the format of the file on the Import menu, or else it won’t show in
your file browser.
The concept behind intermediary files is simple: take an OMF or AAF file and
use it in After Effects, Discreet Smoke, or Premiere—any application using media files.
The problem is that not all applications comply with the use of the file type. Some pre-
fer their own formats. Intermediary files usually consist of two types of file. The first is
a composition, which contains all the information about the file. You can compare it to
a sequence that contains information about your media, how it will play back, time-
code numbers and clip information, and so on. The second part is the media itself.
OMF stands for Open Media Framework. These files were the first to be devel-
oped by Avid. They are used by Avid, Digidesign, Adobe, and other software
vendors.
AAF stands for Advanced Authoring Format. Xpress Pro is now compatible
with AAF files as well as OMF files. But OMF is the native format of both Free
DV and Xpress Pro.
To import the OMF or AAF intermediary files, Select File
> Import. When the
Import menu appears, select the file format (either OMFI or AAF, depending on the
format you want to import). Navigate to the file and select it. Free DV and Xpress Pro
will import both metadata (information about the media, such as timecode) and the
media itself.
Exporting
With Free DV and Xpress Pro, you can export media, data, and information about
your sequences, projects, still graphics, QuickTime files, and more. When you add
more video and audio codecs and digital media applications to your system, the export
options seem limitless.
Free DV diverges quite a bit when it comes to exports versus Xpress Pro. Still
graphic exports are limited to JPEG only, whereas Xpress Pro can export in all the for-
mats that it uses to import.
Graphic options allow you to choose between Windows-based graphics
(bitmaps) or Mac-based graphics on both applications. There are some limitations. For
example, certain PICT files made on a Macintosh cannot be imported into Windows-
based applications such as Photoshop.
Still, there are a lot of things that you can do with the exporting abilities of
both. You can export the following:
Individual frames from clips and sequences
AVI, QuickTime, DV Streams, or Windows Media
Audio files for mixing on a digital audio workstation (DAW)
