■ THE AUDIO TOOL
Renaming Sequence Tracks
You can rename your sequence tracks on both Xpress Pro and Free DV by Shift-Ctrl-clicking (Mac)
or right-clicking (Windows) to get a contextual menu.Click in the Timeline window when you do
this, and you have the option of renaming a selected track.Remember, you have to select the track
and do your clicking inside of the Timeline for this option.
The Audio Tool
There are some settings that can be made using the audio metering right on the Time-
line. Let’s go over each of them. To access these tools, click the menu box to the right
of the audio meters. The menu will appear (see Figure 4.17). You can use the audio
tool on the Timeline or optionally select a vertical version of the same thing by select-
ing Tools
> Audio Tool.
Peak Hold
Selecting Peak Hold allows you to see the loudness of peaks easily. The entire purpose
of holding peaks is that the meter can be very responsive and our eyes might not notice
an occasional burst in audio levels. Peak Hold will display a peak of audio and hold it
for a second while continuing to monitor at the same time. I personally recommend
that you use it when monitoring audio. This is the default setting.
Infinite Peak
It might not seem necessary to use the Infinite Hold setting. After all, why on earth
would you want to see the top peak for an infinite amount of time?
The most common use of Infinite Hold is for capturing. When capturing long
segments, you might not be giving your complete attention to the audio levels. If you
select Infinite Peak while capturing, you can see what happened to the levels while you
were away. If the infinite peak is too loud, you can reset levels and start again.
