Then do the exact same thing over again. Press the Play Transition Loop button

again and press the W button. The B side of the transition plays.

Now you know how to analyze both the A and B sides of the transition for bet-

ter accuracy.

Sync Breaks

In this first transition, you need to trim the B side. Let’s try trimming using numerical

entry. Because the troublesome frames are on the B side, select the right monitor by

clicking it. (Note that the pink rollers in the Timeline are on the B side only.) When

clicking the monitors, be careful not to click too close to the middle. If you do, the sys-

tem will trim on both sides.

Now look at the track selector. You need to trim on all tracks so the audio and

video will remain in sync. But before you do, select Video Only so that you can see the

sync breaks.

Click the B monitor and enter +3.

Note that the sync breaks appear on the Timeline, indicating that by trimming a

single track on a single side of the transition, we have thrown everything out of sync.

Cool, huh?

Let’s go ahead and fix our “mistake.” Enter –3, and the sequence will remain in

its original state.

Trimming Using Numerical Entry

Now we’ll do it the right way. Select all the tracks in the Timeline. Just how many bad

frames do we have? My guess is three. Enter +3 so that the B side moves forward, erasing

the bad frames from the sequence. Now press the Play Trim Loop button again. How

does it sound now?

Trimming Using Rollers

Move on to the next transition by clicking on it in the Timeline with the Trim mode

on. Notice that the pink rollers all move to that next transition. Be sure that all tracks

are selected again. Go ahead and press the Play Transition Loop button.

Using your editorial skills, determine which side of the transition needs to be

cleaned up (the side with the bad audio). This time, we’ll adjust the edit by pulling on

the pink rollers.

You’ll need to select the side to be trimmed by clicking on either the A-side or

B-side monitor. Using your mouse, click on the pink rollers, moving them forward or

backward over the transition point. Note that as you move the rollers, the numbers

underneath one of the monitors change from zero to the number of frames you are

trimming, along with a + or – sign.

Now release the mouse when you think you’ve gotten rid of the bad frames. The

trim has been made.
