Choosing Recording Tracks
The Capture tool will capture only the media that is selected on the track selection
section of the Capture tool. Free DV/Xpress will automatically activate the tracks that
were selected in the previous capture session. Before capturing, you should play back
your recorded media and determine which tracks need to be captured. For example, if
you find that there is no audio on track 2 of a tape, there is no need to capture it.
If you decide to capture it anyway, valuable drive space will be used.
However, there might be times when one channel of audio was not used for a
period of time, which is why there are production assistants and tape logs. If the proj-
ect was too low-budget and a production assistant wasn’t used or a tape log wasn’t cre-
ated, ask the director which tracks were used.
Xpress Pro and Free DV will capture two audio tracks, video, and timecode
information. But when you look at the Capture screen, it looks as if you can capture
eight tracks. This is an artifact from higher-end Avid software. To select or deselect
tracks, click the corresponding buttons in the track selection portion of the Capture
tool. The buttons toggle on and off. When they are colored, they are on; when gray,
they are off. If you try to select tracks without a deck hooked up to your system,
Xpress Pro or Free DV will tell you that no signal is present. Make sure you connect
the deck before running the software.
Choosing Video and Audio Input Formats
After you select tracks, you need to determine what source they are coming from. Below
the row of track buttons is a selection of source resolutions, labeled Video and Audio.
If you don’t have the optional Mojo, your video resolution will default to OHCI.
However, if you are using a transcoder or Mojo, your source can originate from any
videotape format available. Transcoders allow you to go from any video source to
FireWire or OHCI video. The type of connectors used with transcoders can vary from
simple RCA inputs to component BNCs.
