■ TRIM SELECTION
I liken this scenario to rolling out carpet. Think of the pink rollers in your Time-
line as little rolls of carpet. When you are trimming backward on the A side of a transi-
tion, the carpet rolls back before the transition, thus subtracting frames that occur
before the transition. If you trim forward on the A side, you roll the carpet forward,
adding more frames to the transition.
B-Side Source Trimming
Trimming the B side of an edit (see Figure 5.7) adds or reduces the amount of footage
in the incoming scene. Using the previous analogy, the B-side carpet roll is located at
the beginning of the incoming cut, and the tail of the carpet continues in front of it. So
if you trim forward on the B side, you are rolling up the carpet and making the B-side
clip shorter. If you roll backward on the B side, the carpet is rolling backward, thus
adding more frames.

Trimming Both Sides
You enter A/B Trim mode by clicking between your Source and Record monitors.
There is a scroll icon that appears when you move the mouse. When this icon appears
to have two sides, click the mouse and you will be in A/B Trim mode. Notice that the
pink rollers appear on both sides of the transition in the Timeline (see Figure 5.8).
