■ EDITING WORKFLOW
The effects tool on Free DV is somewhat limited, but you can create and customize
an effect and save it for later use. Many effects editors pride themselves on their arsenal
of solutions for situations that necessitate an effect. With a disk full of templates, you
will become valued as an editor who has experimented and mastered the effects palette.
Avid’s Free DV effect template is pretty basic, but you can add custom effects as
you go. When (or if) you should decide to upgrade to Xpress, you will find many more
effects in the palette, all of which can be customized for your purposes.
Export
In many cases, you might find that to complete an effect or a composite image that
Avid cannot do, you’ll need to export your media (see Figure 1.14) to use on another
application, such as Avid D|S Nitris, After Effects, or Smoke. Avid Free DV and Xpress
allow you to export these necessary files with the simplicity and ease that the exporting
tool provides.

The export tool is also an excellent resource for sending still reference frames,
creating storyboards, or showing examples of the work to clients. You can create simple
QuickTime files that can be e-mailed or FTP’d to clients to show your progress on the
program. Any visual or aural information in your bins can be exported, along with the
bins and projects that you create.
Output
When your program is completed, you can output to any video recording media such
as DVD or videotape using Avid’s Digital Cut tool. The Digital Cut tool (see Figure 1.15)
allows you to output to a huge variety of sources. It can record using a timecoded tape
for frame accuracy, or assemble-edit using no timecode, or just play back to a DVD
