FireWire If your deck is FireWire-capable, use FireWire. It keeps the signal in the digi-

tal domain with minimal loss. However, it is important to note that although the signal

is digital, rendering of effects will cause some additional loss of signal, so your effects

might not look as good as the original source.

Component Professional component video consists of three separate connections, all

normally with BNC connectors: R-Y, B-Y, and Y. These three separate color compo-

nents produce a superior analog signal.

Component video works much like the old Technicolor three-strip film process. By sep-

arating the signal into three different color-sensitive elements, the image is far better

than a single video signal. Although this is a very good signal, FireWire is better, only

because it is a lossless digital signal direct from its source. Component video uses an

electrical analog signal and therefore deteriorates a little with each transfer.

S-Video An S-Video connection (also called Y/C;) separates the brightness and color

signals. The S-Video signal uses a special connector, shown in Figure 2.15. Although it

is not the best quality, S-Video is superior to a single video signal, also known as com-

posite video.

Composite Video Composite video uses a single RCA/phono or BNC cable as a carrier

of the video signal. This signal is a combination of the entire image, thus it lacks the

fidelity of the other signals.

Note: Although the Mojo appears to offer only FireWire,S-Video, and Composite video input,you can also

use professional component video signals by purchasing Avid’s component cable.The cable plugs into Mojo’s

S-Video and Composite video connectors and accepts a component signal.It’s well worth the dollars for a

much better signal.
