It’s important to remember that when logging and capturing, you should always

give a couple of seconds at the beginning and end of the clip. These “handles” can last

for just a few seconds. The reason for including them is that you might have to do a

dissolve or an effect that uses the extra media. Better safe than sorry. This was one of

my first lessons in nonlinear cutting.

Tape-Naming Conventions

Before you capture or log a tape, it is very important that you establish a tape-naming

scheme. Creating an edited program is an exciting process, but you have to stay organ-

ized. There is nothing worse than an unorganized project. You want to spend your time

editing, not looking for a lost tape. For example, if you have field tapes 1–5, you can

name them F1, F2, F3, and so on. Studio tapes could be named S1, S2, S3, and so on.

The reason for establishing tape names before capture is that these names will be used

throughout the edit, and possibly for other outside work—such as 3D effects.

Without a proper tape-naming scheme, you can easily get lost. One of the more

powerful features of Free DV and Xpress Pro is the database of information about each

clip. That database contains the tape names (see Figure 2.3). Whatever naming scheme

you choose, make sure that the name on the label on the tape matches the name you

use in the database. This is an editing session, not an “I Love Lucy” skit!

Choosing a Resolution

If you’re using Free DV, you can pretty much skip this section. Free DV has only

one resolution, and it is DV 25. But if you are using Xpress Pro, you’ll need to choose

a resolution before you start digitizing.
